We met Kelly Haney when she was operating her business out of a fellow artist’s tattoo shop in Fishtown. Her business was rapidly expanding, so she was looking to branch out and operate out of her own space.
Tattoo shops, which are classified as “body art services” under the zoning code, are automatically prohibited when in 500 feet of a school or residential district. Because of this, special approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) was required for Kelly to open and operate her business (in the Bok Building in South Philly).
The project received unanimous support from the neighbors and board of the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association as well as the ZBA.
What makes Kelly’s business extra special is that she also offers cosmetic tattooing. Cosmetic tattooing, other than for beautifying reasons, is highly beneficial for those who have lost hair (like cancer patients for example).
